. The story is transcendent for both themain characters. Finding Forrester 2000 A young African-American who is an aspiring writer, discovers that a reclusive Pulitzer Prize winning author lives down the street in the Bronx from him.
Working from an intelligent, well crafted screenplay by Mike Rich, Van Santestablishes the milieu within which the story will unfold with his openingshot: A black youth setting the stage in rap. The other characters were well-acted though not generallywell-developed hence much criticism of this movie. It is a powerful and movingportrayal. The photography is very straightforward, allowing the characters to tell thestory without the intrusive use of stylish shots that are all to prevalentlately.
And it's Connery'ssuperlative performance, through which he conveys the complexities of thecharacter so well, that illuminates the true depth and multi-faceteddimensions of Forrester; it is not only memorable, but worthy of an Oscar. When you boil it down, Jamal found Jamal and Forrester foundForrester just in time , though they found themselves by reaching out toeach other and forming a bond of friendship across a gulf of age, suspicion, and race. Sean Connery is in top form and continues to make the case for being one ofour best and most treasured actors. Perfectly cast as Forrester, he lends an adamant toughness to thecharacter initially, then slowly and subtly allows the vulnerability thatlies beneath the gruff exterior to surface. But he knows that within the limited confines of his environs his skill withthe written word means next to nothing in regards to his future, and he seesbasketball as the only viable means of doing anything worthwhile with hislife.
Forthose who enjoy good dramatic performances and intriguing character studies, this film is not to be missed. It's clever and effective, and the contrast between the rap at the beginning and the song at the endnot only frames the film but underscores the impact of the story, as itsuccinctly encapsulates the changes in Jamal's life. Perhaps the plot and story could have been tighter, but it's reallya remarkable job for first-time screenwriter Mike Rich. Others have compared Finding Forrester to Goodwill Hunting also directed byGus Van Sant and to Scent of a Woman, suggesting that it is just a ripoffof the plot in those two. The way they do this, without the usual twists ofself-destruction and miraculous salvation, is both touching and refreshinglyreal.
Director: Writer: Starring: , , , , , ». Rob Brown's portrayal of Jamal wasequally reserved yet forceful. Salingerhas been mentioned, but the similarities are only superficial. Harper Lee To Kill a Mockingbird is a much better fit first novel wins Pulitzer, nothing else ever written, lived as a recluse , but I almost favor theenigmatic Gardner McKay though Forrester is certainly different in manyways from McKay. He gives a virtuoso performance in thisfilm with a complex and ornery character. This is a highly intelligent film with a strong story, steady direction andmarvelous acting.
